The end of the investigation of Gaddafi’s financing for the 2007 Sarkozy campaign

The French Press Agency reported, citing an informed source, that the judges of the inquiry into allegations that Nicolas Sarkozy’s campaign for French president in 2007 received funds from Libya closed the case.

According to the French agency, the investigation into this case was started following the publication of a document on the “Mediabart” website in 2012 between the two presidential election sessions, which is meant to demonstrate that the Muammar Gaddafi regime funded the campaign of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, which resulted in his victory. The judges accumulated a series of troubling evidence over the course of roughly ten years that seemed to support the idea that Gaddafi was supporting Sarkozy’s campaign, but no material evidence was lost, even though suspicious money transactions have so far resulted in accusations against 13 people.

The defendants now have the opportunity to prepare their notes before the financial prosecutor and before the investigation judges decide whether to continue or discontinue the probe.
Sarkozy was accused of bribery and illegal financing for the election campaign, and obtaining Libyan public funds and criminal collusion, while in the document that announced the end of the investigations, which was seen by “Agence France Presse”, the illegal financing crime of electoral campaigns was not received.

It should be emphasised that 13 people have been charged in this case thus far, including former ministers Claude Guyan, Eric, Wathir, and Barris Orotvo, as well as the French-Lebanese businessmen Ziad Taqi al-Din and Alexander Jawhari, who are believed to have served as two mediators.
