People of interest detained and released after potential explosive device at Toronto airport destroyed

The two people who were detained after a suspicious package was discovered at Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport and destroyed in a controlled explosion have been released without being charged, according to police.
Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Toronto Police reported that officers responded to a report of a suspicious item at the island airport ferry terminal in the city.
Roads in the region were closed to the general public while the emergency disposal unit of the force arrived on the spot to conduct an investigation.

Police ordered a mandatory evacuation of Billy Bishop Airport and the nearby structures.
Buses were reportedly sent in for local evacuation, according to the police.
Const. Laura Brabant wrote in an email that she had to “pull the fire alarms in all the neighbouring buildings to persuade people to leave.”
Passengers inside the airport reported seeing six heavily-armed police officers in tactical gear come into the terminal and head toward an upper floor, away from crowds gathered near the exits.

Initial examinations, according to the police, made authorities think the package “may be an explosive device.
Two people were apprehended by police and held.
Police did not file any charges against the two people of interest despite conducting a “extensive investigation,” instead releasing them.
According to Toronto police, “we are convinced that this was a single occurrence and there is no additional risk to public safety.”
Flights at the airport have since resumed.
