Thousands protest in Germany, demanding the support of energy prices

On Saturday, tens of thousands of protestors gathered in six German cities to call for greater equity in the distribution of government funds intended to combat rising energy prices and living expenses and to urge a swift shift away from reliance on fossil fuels.

The demonstrators marched through Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hanover, Shattjart, Dresden, and Frankfurt-Maine while holding signs with broad demands, such as reducing inflation, shutting down nuclear power plants, and raising energy rates for the underprivileged. Greenbis, who helped organise the rallies, claimed that there were over 24,000 protesters there, however the police estimated that there were only about 1,800 participants in Berlin.

The 200 billion euro (195 billion dollar) government rescue package, which attempts to shield businesses and individuals from the effects of high energy costs, was passed by the German Parliament on Friday. The package comprises a one-time payment to cover a family’s or small or medium-sized business’ monthly gas expenses as well as a mechanism to lower rates starting in March. The rate of inflation in Germany reached 10 in September, the highest level in more than 25 years.

9%, primarily due to an increase in energy prices.
