China demands Germany clarity on the acquisition plans on a container station in Hamburg Port

The Chinese government strongly protested their plans to partially acquire a container station in the Hamburg port of Germany.
In a statement released today, Saturday, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that practical collaboration and mutual benefit have been the guiding principles ever since diplomatic relations were first established 50 years ago.

The statement also emphasised that both China and Germany must adhere to openness and cooperation in order to enhance the health and stable development of their respective countries’ economic and trade cooperation. It also added that both countries actively contribute to each other’s development and profit from this.

German politicians and authorities voiced their scepticism and opposition on Friday regarding the Berlin Consultant Bureau’s ambitions to buy a stake in a Hamburg cargo port.
The controversy comes against the background of an agreement concluded in 2021 between HHLA ports in Hamburg and the Chinese shipping company “Cosco”, according to which the latter gets a 35% stake in the German company in the Tolurt region in Hamburg.

The permission of the admission of the Chinese agreed upon to the container terminal in Hamburg is under dispute, according to media sources, and the German government has the right to reject this agreement.

In light of tense relations with Russia and the ensuing energy crisis, German Economy Minister Robert Habik warned of new dependencies. Recently, Chancellor Olaf Schultz admitted that the problem has not yet been resolved and that many concerns still need to be answered.
