According to diplomatic sources on Friday, the foreign ministers of Southeast Asian nations would meet urgently in Jakarta the following week to discuss the Burmese situation before the Southeast Asian Countries Association (ASEAN).
Since the military coup against Aung Saint Suu Che’s administration in February 2021, the Association of Southeast Asian States has taken the lead in successful efforts to end the crisis in Burma. The ASAS is set to conduct its summit there in November.
A special meeting is required, according to an Indonesian ambassador who spoke to AFP, “because there are specific problems that would be handled before the ASEAN leaders gathered.”
There has been no progress since the plan that was placed in April 2021 and called for the end of violence and the increase in humanitarian aid and a dialogue between the Burmese army and the anti -coup movement.
The decision was made by the group, which is made up of ten Southeast Asian nations and is frequently ineffective, after the Military Council turned down calls to send a special representative to mediate with all parties involved, including ousted democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The five-point plan, which was agreed in April and intended to assist restart the discussion in Burma and expedite the delivery of humanitarian relief, was mentioned in the statement as having made “insufficient progress.”
By delaying the travel of Erwan Youssef, Brunei’s deputy foreign minister and the association’s special envoy selected after months of discussions, to Burma, the military group prevented the agreement from being put into effect.
According to certain member nations, Burma should be given “a manoeuvre leeway to adjust their internal conditions and return them to normal.”
The statement read, “I took note of the objections voiced by the representative of Burma,” and added that the organisation had chosen to “invite a non-political Burmese actor” to the summit.
