Macron announces France’s withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty before the climate summit

On Friday, October 21, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country has made the decision to leave the Energy Charter Treaty.
At the conclusion of the summit of the leaders of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, Macron said that France would leave the International Energy Charter.
He said that this agreement signed in 1994 “provides excessive protection of fossil fuel . . . and contradicts the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The withdrawal from this convention, according to Macron, is “an important step that many have asked.
Prior to the COP27 climate summit, which will begin on November 6, Macron made his decision.
The European Union was urged to leave the “Energy Charter” accord by the Supreme Climate Council because it does not follow the timetables for cutting carbon emissions outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement.

The Energy Charter Treaty, or ECT, was abandoned by Italy in 2015, while Spain, the Netherlands, and Poland indicated their intentions to withdraw.
In order to safeguard foreign investment in the energy industry, the Energy Charter Treaty came into effect in 1998. Environmental and climate advocacy groups demanded that all of the European Union’s members withdraw from the deal.

Member states of the European Union agreed last year that the green agreement’s policies should be reviewed in order to halt any further investments in infrastructure projects based on fossil fuels “unless they are fully compatible with an ambitious, specific, and clear path towards climate neutrality,” in line with the objectives of the United Nations.

Through a new strategy that aims to catch up to the late France with the energy policies of its neighbours in the European Union, Macron called last month for “acceleration at a remarkable speed” for the pace of producing renewable energy in his country, including marine wind and solar farms.

Before the climate meeting, Macron declares France’s withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty.
