Lettuce outlasts Liz Truss following her resignation

Liz Truss, the British prime minister, has officially been replaced by a head of iceberg lettuce following her resignation late night NZT.
The Daily Star, a British tabloid, set up the “lettuce cam” video to see if Truss could maintain his position as premier before the lettuce withered.
The lettuce, a symbol for the prime minister’s rapid slide in popularity, eventually emerged victorious after seven days of global media attention.

The joke was prompted by a snide comparison made in The Economist between the Conservative Party leader’s anticipated longevity and the “shelf-life of a lettuce.”
When Truss announced her resignation on day seven of the lettuce cam, the livestream caption was updated to read, “This lettuce outlasted Liz Truss.”

To the collective delight of the thousands of spectators, a tiny plastic crown was placed on the vegetable, a bottle of champagne was opened, and the national anthem played.
The pound fell drastically against the US dollar in recent weeks as a result of Truss’ pledge to cut taxes and her later reversal on the strategy. Inflation also shot up.
She held office for for 45 days, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in the nation’s history.

The Daily Star claimed it had projected a picture of the lettuce onto the side of the Houses of Parliament as a final jab at the departing prime minister.
The price of the lettuce was 60p (about $1.19 NZ).

After Liz Truss resigns, lettuce survives.
