Zamalek began its attempt to defend its third consecutive Egyptian Premier League championship with a priceless 2–0 victory over Smouha in the opening round of the competition.
Al-Ahly defeated its Ismaili host 1–0 in the remaining stage matches played on Wednesday, while Pyramids and its Enppi host were tied 1–1.
Zamalek waited until the 79th minute, Sherif Reda, the Smouha player, scored a goal in the goal of his team, before Samson Akinola added the second goal in the fifth minute of the calculated time instead of lost for the second half.
In his competition this season, Zamalek, who had 14 victories in the competition, took the first three victories.
With Smouha points, Zamalek sets out on its quest to defend its championship.
