News from Al-Madinah: An elaborate scheme to buy military technologies from American companies and smuggle them illegally to Russia for use in its conflict in Ukraine has been the subject of new criminal charges and sanctions revealed by US President Joe Biden’s administration.
The US Department of Justice announced the seizure of some military hardware from the Ukrainian battlefields as well as plans to halt the shipment to Russia of other nuclear weapons-related technologies in Latvia.
The Ministry of Justice accused about ten people in separate cases in the states of New York and Connecticut, including Russian citizens accused of purchasing sensitive military technologies from American companies and laundering tens of millions of dollars to wealthy Russian businessmen. Latvians were accused of defrauding to smuggle equipment into Russian oil intermediaries.
“As I said, investigators and prosecutors will make unremitting efforts to discover and try individuals whose illegal actions undermine the rule of law and enable the Russian regime to continue its unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” US Minister of Justice, Merik Garland, said in a statement.
Five Russian nationals are among the defendants in New York, along with two other oil merchants who were detained in Venezuela.
Three suspects from Latvia and one from Ukraine were detained for months at the request of American authorities after being apprehended in connection with the Connecticut case.
They are being accused of conspiring to smuggle a high-resolution grinding equipment made in Connecticut into Russia. A licence is required to export or re-export this equipment to Russia.
The final set of sanctions against Russia by the Biden administration is based on forensic accusations.
