RCMP called to Kelowna middle school Tuesday after report of possible gunshots

When RCMP were summoned to a Kelowna middle school on Tuesday for a report of gunfire, teachers and students were taken aback.

Staff at Springvalley Middle School reported authorities of gunshots in the surrounding neighbourhood around 3 p.m., prompting a shelter-in-place process.

Parents had arrived at the school for the 3:15 p.m. dismissal and were either summoned inside or requested to wait in their vehicles.

Springvalley children boarded the bus outside the school and returned inside.

The RCMP determined that the information was incorrect, thus the shelter-in-place order was rescinded after 17 minutes.

“School administrators and staff are taught to follow precise rules and always act with extreme caution to guarantee the safety of school communities,” Central Okanagan Public Schools said in a press release.
