Players from Kazakhstan and Turkey got into a humorous fight on Monday during the crowning ceremony for the World Wrestling World Championship in Antalya, Turkey.
In young women’s contests under 50 kg, Kazakhstan’s Diana Tiocova and Dana Asanova placed second and third, respectively, using their left arms.
When they took their place on the platform, they raised the great Kazakhstan flag between them, to cover the whole platform, forcing the first winner of the competition, such as Caglian Deria Sirin from Turkey, to raise her smaller Turkish flag over the Kazakhi flag.
And the Turkish player and the two Kazakhstan players scrambled to reserve a spot for their respective nation’s flag on the podium’s centre.
The two Kazakhstani players came up with the straightforward solution of hoisting the flag in the air behind the Turkish player.
In a clear attempt to defuse any potential tensions between the two countries, the accident was addressed by the coach of the Kazakhi national team, who apologized for what happened and attributed the reason to the enthusiasm of the two players who had for the first time an international competition.
This episode “did not impact the general situation and camaraderie between athletes in Kazakhstan and Turkey,” according to the press department of the Kazakhstan Sports and Physical Culture Committee.
1700 wrestlers from 50 nations will compete in the World Wrestling Championship using weapons from October 14 to October 23.
