The International Olympic Committee issues a new statement on the sanctions imposed on Russia

The need to extend the penalties against Russian athletes was stated by Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee.

During the 26th General Assembly conference of the National Olympic Committees in Seoul, which will take place from October 18 to October, the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee issued a new statement regarding the exclusion of the Russians: “We cannot live up to the standards of our Olympic objective, which is to safeguard athletes and bring everyone together in peaceful competition.

He continued: “Unfortunately, in this case, the only way to protect this task was the recommendation not only to participate in the athletes because of their passport (their nationality). ”
Bach emphasised the need of maintaining the sanctions on Russia and said, in a final statement, “We must ensure the integrity of international sporting events and defend our freedom.

“On September 30, Bach set the requirements for Russian athletes’ participation in international competitions; in his view, those who have disassociated themselves from the crisis in Ukraine must compete under a neutral scientific standard.

It is noteworthy that most sports organisations detained the national teams of Belarus and Russia at the end of February on the advice of the International Olympic Committee, despite the fact that the Russians carried on competing in some sports (such as chess, cars, cycling, and tennis) from a neutral position.
