Spain seeks to promote religious pluralism in society

In order to promote religious plurality in society, the Spanish Council of Ministers adopted a royal decree of a bill providing subsidies worth 1.17 million euros for Jewish, Islamic, and Evangelical minorities.

The freedom to practise one’s religion is guaranteed by the Spanish state’s general budget, which also includes annual grants for these minorities’ adherents. These grants are distributed within the framework of the Pluralism and Coexistence Fund, a government organisation that oversees the management of these funds and is eager to promote the pluralistic religious culture.

The Spanish agency Europa Press reported that the religious authorities benefiting from the grant are the Union of Evangelical Religious Entities, the Union of Jewish Communities, and the Spanish Islamic Commission, which the state contributes to its financing. The state is eager to take additional concrete steps to improve social integration or religious support in jails, clinics, and public assistance facilities.

Spain wants to encourage society’s religious diversity.
