The 686-page novel “VEACELERERI” by Turkish author Orhan Bamouk, who won the Nobel Prize in 2006, was recently published in English by American Alfred A. Knopf.
The novel The Nights of the Plague, which was accused of inciting “hatred and hostility” by disparaging Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and making fun of the Turkish flag, centres on the spread of the plague epidemic on a fictitious island during the Ottoman Empire, but the Istanbul court decided not to pursue legal action. Because of the lack of evidence, but the accusations returned to be chasing Orhan Bamouq again when the lawyer who filed the lawsuit filed the court’s ruling that re -investigated the charges against Bamouq again.
Orhan Bamuq started working on “The Nights of the Plague” several years before the emergence and spread of the Corona virus. The book’s events take place during the outbreak of the plague in 1901, which is known for being the time of the third spread of the disease, which claimed millions of lives in Asia.
Orhan Bamouq draws parallels between the spread of epidemics in the past and the current state of affairs in his book. In the narration that was finished after the spread of the Korona pandemic, he demonstrated how fear always governs our actions and how denial is always the first reaction to epidemic outbreaks. He also demonstrated how governments frequently respond slowly to epidemics and manipulate statistics to downplay their prevalence.
