In the early hours of Wednesday morning, many Iranians gathered at Imam Khomeini Airport to welcome climber Anaz Rakabi, who defied harsh Iranian laws by competing in the Asian climbing competitions in the South Korean capital without wearing a veil, in order to align their position with the uprising in Iran over the murder of the young woman Muhsa Amini.
Despite my knee’s arrival in Iran at five in the morning, there are crowds waiting to greet and welcome them at the airport, especially since its stance has gained widespread support and the Iranian uprising has entered its second month in protest against the regime’s treatment of women and its violations of their rights.
The “Nazi Rakabi” was abducted by defying the laws requiring women to cover their faces in public spaces during the Iranian uprising, which began on September 16th of last year. Iran is being represented at the Asian climbing competition finals, which were held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
Rakabi made an appearance when she was competing sans a veil, in defiance of a legislation that was passed in 1983 and threatened people who did not wear veils in public with jail time and penalties.
