Labor agency tallies votes in another Amazon union election

NEW YORK (AP) — The fledgling organisation that won the nation’s first-ever union victory for an Amazon warehouse S. is going to be put to the test on Tuesday when the results of yet another election are expected.
Workers’ votes will be tallied by representatives of the National Labor Relations Board at a location in Schodack, New York, close to Albany. According to Amazon, the facility employs about 800 employees.

This will be the third election for a union at an Amazon warehouse this year, and the fourth overall. The fledgling team surprised everyone by winning in April at a Staten Island company warehouse, but was hurt by losing soon after at another facility close by. A union election in Alabama, led by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union at a warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, remains too close to call.

With more than two dozen election-related complaints filed and a request for a new vote, Amazon has been attempting to reverse the ALU’s lone success. A federal labour commissioner came to the conclusion last month that the union ought to be recognised as the warehouse’s bargaining representative. Amazon, which hasn’t recognized the union, said it intends to appeal the decision. And CEO Andy Jassy has also signaled the company could take the case to federal court.

ALU activists claim their main priorities include petitioning for additional elections and forcing Amazon to enter into contract negotiations at the location where a unionisation vote was held. According to Unionstats, Schodack is next to one of the most heavily unionised metro regions in the nation. Experts remark a win there. com — would offer the group more leverage and a chance to demonstrate its prior win wasn’t a one-off..
