Despite the tragedy of the “Kanguruhan” stadium, which claimed more than 130 lives in October, Swiss, the President of the International Football Association (FIFA), confirmed today, Tuesday, that Indonesia will host the World Cup for Less than 20 Years in 2019.
In the wake of the October 1 stadium tragedy, Infantino announced the opening of an office in Indonesia to oversee the country’s efforts to alter its football culture.
After meeting with Indonesian President Goko Widodo, Infantino stated at a press conference, “We have the World Cup for teams under 20 years in which the finest players in the globe (from this category) come to Indonesia, and their abilities will appear from Indonesia in front of the whole world.”
“For this, we need ten stadiums in the most modern design, and we need operations to work properly,” he continued.
The U -20 World Cup will be held between May 20 and June 11 next year.
The Corona pandemic issue forced the postponement of the championship, which was scheduled to take place in 2021.
According to Infantino, the reform would concentrate on infrastructure, mass behaviour, and stadium operations.
Following the Arima Crohnos team’s 2/3 defeat in front of its guest, Persibaya Ciorebaya, thousands of fans invaded the “Kanguruhan” stadium, causing pandemonium.
Police fired tear gas canisters at the stadium’s crowd and told them to head for the exit gates, which were only partially open so they could apprehend those responsible. However, the stampede resulted in the deaths of 133 people, including 37 children.
An independent fact -finding team stated that tear gas canisters launched by the police were responsible for the deadly stampede, and demanded a criminal investigation into the behavior of security personnel.
According to the police, six people are accused of neglecting to prevent a stampede, which carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.
FIFA affirms that Indonesia will host the U-20 World Cup despite the tragedy of Kanguruhan.
