Courtois: The “Yashin” award kept the goalkeeper from the Golden Ball

On Monday in Paris, the French magazine “France Football” presented Karim Benzema, a Cortua Fellow at Real Madrid, with the Golden Boot Award for Best Player in the World.
In addition to helping Real Madrid win the Spanish League and Champions League last season with 44 goals in 46 games, Benzema also twice won the Hattrick title, which coincided with his ten goals in the continental championship’s elimination rounds. Courtois acknowledged that Benzema deserves the award.

According to the international “Opta” network, which specialises in football statistics, Courtois also played a part in this accomplishment since he made a record nine tackles against Liverpool in the final game.
The Yashin Award, given to the world’s greatest goalkeeper, was won by Courtois over Liverpool’s Brazilian goalie, although he believes that he deserved to be higher up in the Golden Ball final rankings.

Courtois told Radio Cadena Sir, “First of all, I would like to say that I am really delighted with Karim Benzema.
“I had no chance to finish the race in a very high place, or win, of course. It seems that attaining the goal is better than addressing it; it is a constant battle in light of the logic of voting.

“I’m not saying I had to win, but we did win the Spanish League and the Champions League, your team won because of your disputes, and you’re only in seventh place because you didn’t make the podium.
“In the list of the first ten places, there are no cannons, at least this year they developed a reward for the greatest guard,” Courtois said in his closing statement.

Courtois: The “Yashin” honour disqualified the goalie from receiving the Golden Ball.
