The European Union decides to deploy observers on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan

News from Al-Madinah: The European Union Foreign Affairs Council decided today, Monday, to deploy more than 40 observers from the Union along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan to monitor, analyze and submit reports on the situation in that region.

The council, which meets in Luxolm, declared in a statement that the observers’ mission would be temporary and not exceed two months, with the goal of keeping an eye on the situation along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and reestablishing safety and tranquilly in the area.

According to Josep Borrell, the European Union’s Supreme Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, the decision to send observers to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was made to “rebuild trust between the two sides in the unstable situation that endangers lives and the process of resolving the conflict between the two neighbouring countries.”

Borrell stated in a news release that this choice “reflects the complete commitment of the European Union to help bring about enduring peace in the South Caucasus region.
Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, Nicole Pashinian, the prime minister of Armenia, Emmanuel Macron, and Charles Michel, the head of the European Council, all reached an understanding at a meeting earlier this month regarding the publication of EU observers on the Armenian side of the Azerbaijani border.
