The death toll from the detainees increased to 8 individuals on Monday, according to the Iranian authorities, who said that four people perished as a result of a fire in Tehran’s Evin Prison. The eight people who died belonged to the prison’s thievery section, according to the judiciary.
A month after protests over the death of the young Iranian Muhsa Amini began, a fire broke out in Tehran’s Evin jail during the night, according to police.
Four prisoners died as a result of the smoke from the fire dissolving, while 61 people were hurt, according to a website connected to the legal authorities. It further stated that four of the injured were in a “severe condition.”
After hearing gunshots and explosions during the fire that started within the facility on Sunday and seeing smoke and fire exiting from it in videos posted on social media, human rights organisations raised worry for the lives of detainees.
As a result of the use of tear gas by the police inside the prison, the relatives of prisoners and human rights organisations raised worry for the life of the inmates.
The fire – in which it was blamed for “riots and clashes” and was subsequently controlled according to the authorities – at a time when Iran is witnessing protests against the death of the young woman, Muhsa Amini, who is 22 years old, after being arrested for violating the strict dress rules.
Since the 2019 rallies against petrol prices, her death on September 16 ignited the worst wave of protests in Iran.
Evin is held captive in northern Tehran, a region recognised for its treatment of political prisoners, which also houses numerous international detainees and criminal suspects. It was reported that hundreds of people were arrested during the demonstrations.
“We do not accept official interpretations,” said the “Human Rights in Iran” group in Oslo, adding that it had received reports that guards have sought to “incite” prisoners.
