Spain’s plan to counter energy consumption in winter during the school year

Joan Suratis, the minister of higher education and universities, and Teresa Ribera, the minister of environmental transformation, energy, and demographic challenge, met with university presidents today, Monday, in Madrid, to discuss creating an energy rationalisation plan for Spanish universities during the winter.

Super Berats stated during the European Forum that the university during the Franco era was constrained and that it was only permitted to discuss it in one language, emphasising that “The university must be a venue for the presentation of all ideas. And our main concern is that this will serve as a forum for hate speech.”
Some universities in Valencia have offered the possibility of heating during the winter due to the high cost of energy, as a result of the war in Ukraine.

To meet with university presidents “to establish a plan on measures that enable universities to adjust to this emergency situation,” the minister acknowledged speaking with Ribera.
The minister pointed out that the Spanish government has taken measures in this regard, including keeping heating devices at a temperature of 19 degrees during the winter season, and other measures to reduce the cost of energy, but also stressed the need to develop a special plan for universities.

Due to the high cost of energy, according to the Supreme Council of Universities, the university’s budget needs to be boosted by up to 60% from what was announced at the start of the current academic year. The governments of self -government regions bear energy costs in public universities, and the Supreme Council believes that each university must take the measures it deems appropriate individually to provide energy according to its circumstances..
