Shaughnessy Heights residents concerned following house explosion

Shaugnessy Heights residents are worried after a house explosion on Friday night in the area.
At 10:33 p.m., a house explosion in the 1600 block of Selkirk Avenue resulted in one person from the neighbourhood being taken to the hospital.
The person was inside the house when the explosion occurred, and they as a result sustained serious injuries.
Five nearby homes were evacuated out of an abundance of caution, and several nearby neighbours claim that there was a very strong gas smell in the air.

“As of now, we are unsure of what occurred. Just a strong gas smell was there, said to neighbour Dianne Kennedy.
It was so close to my house that I was scared.
Kennedy reported to Global News that her house shook and she heard a huge explosion.
She claimed, “I feared someone had drove through my fence and struck my house.
“So I raced outside and grabbed my phone to see what had happened. Additionally, the road had glass on it.
Kennedy said the house was blown up but there was no fire.

Another neighbour who lives close by saw the explosion and made a similar comment.
There was no smoking. I believe it blew up because of gas because I did smell it. However, there wasn’t much smoke, and it didn’t even catch fire, according to neighbour Christian Rodriguez.
The side walls were destroyed. The windows faced the road. The back backyard is the same. Everything was just out and gone,” he added.

According to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, firefighters checked gas readings to make sure there wasn’t any gas accumulation in dwellings.
The locals feared that their homes might suffer the same fate.
“A gas explosion occurred. I think you could really get hurt if you’re just not paying attention for a split second,” added Rodriguez.
A damage assessment was still pending Saturday as the explosion was still being investigated.
Including records from Rosanna Hempel.
