Man United’s Greenwood remanded in custody for attempted rape

Mason Greenwood, a football player for Manchester United, will remain in detention for more than a month after a district judge granted him bail on accusations of attempted rape, controlling behaviour, and assault.
Before being led from the courtroom at Manchester Magistrates’ Court down the steps, the forward, age 21, turned to face his family from the dock.
The same woman is accused of all three offences.
The footballer was initially detained in January in connection with claims involving a young woman after pictures and videos were uploaded online.

He had been out on bond since, but on Saturday, he was taken into custody near Trafford for allegedly breaking the terms of his release.
Press and spectators, including members of Greenwood’s family, filled the small courtroom’s public gallery.
The Bowdon footballer, who was accompanied by two dock officers and was dressed in a grey hooded Nike sweatshirt and grey jogging trousers, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and residence.
According to reports, the attempted rape happened in October 2021.

Between November 2018 and October of this year, he is alleged to have engaged in controlling and coercive behaviour, including accessing and monitoring the complainant’s social media accounts and making threatening and disparaging remarks to her.
The assault charge with actual bodily injury is from December 2021.

The forward, who has made one appearance for England, was prohibited from playing or practising with the Old Trafford club hours after the allegations went viral online at the start of the year.
Greenwood’s sponsorship agreement with Nike was put on hold and eventually terminated, and Electronic Arts acknowledged that he had been dropped from the Fifa 22 game’s active squads.
On November 21, Greenwood will appear before Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Reporters were informed by the defence team that a new bail application would be made.

Greenwood of Man United was kept in jail for the attempted rape.
