K-pop group BTS members will serve in South Korea’s military

According to South Korean law, the members of the K-pop band BTS must serve their mandatory military obligations, according to a statement made by their management company on Monday (local time). This effectively puts an end to the argument for exempting the members due to their artistic achievements.
The eldest member of the band, Jin, will retract his request to put off his conscription at the end of the month and take the necessary conscription processes, according to Big Hit Music.

According to the company’s notification to financial regulators, which it defined as management-related information that can potentially affect investment decisions, the six additional members also intend to join the military.
The company and BTS members are “looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service pledge,” according to a new statement from Big Hit on Twitter.
No further information on the timing of their service was given.

In support of the city’s EXPO proposal, the band members played together in Busan over the weekend, but until 2025, only individual endeavours seem to be in the works.
In order to preserve fairness in the nation’s military duty, Lee Ki Sik, commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration, told lawmakers last month that it would be “ideal” for BTS members to complete their military obligations.

When Jin turned 30 in December, there was considerable discussion in South Korea about whether BTS members had to enrol in the military.
Under South Korean law, most able-bodied men are required to perform 18-21 months of military service, but special exemptions had been granted for athletes and artists who excel in certain international competitions that have been tied with national prestige.

The South Korean draught causes young men to stop working or studying, therefore evading military service or obtaining exemptions is a very touchy subject. Recent polls of public opinion revealed that opinions on whether BTS members should join the military were divided.
