Guterres: The situation in Ethiopia is out of control

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requested a stop to the fighting, calling it “out of control,” in Ethiopia’s Tigray area and requesting the “prompt withdrawal” of Eritrean soldiers.
“Ethiopia’s situation has gotten out of hand. Violence and destruction have reached very disturbing levels,” Antonio Guterres told reporters.

He continued, “The conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia must end,” and demanded that the Eritrean military leave Ethiopia “immediately.”
Guterres came, while the Ethiopian government pledged to regain control of airports and other locations in Tigray, ignoring an appeal from the African Union for an immediate and unconditional shooting.

After a five-month period of peace, the fighting resumed in August, only to be wrecked by the conflict’s resolution, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties and pervasive atrocities.
According to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, 13 million people in the provinces of Tigray, Amhara, and Afar were already experiencing food insecurity prior to the resumption of hostilities.

He emphasised that while aid has been intermittently arriving in the other two regions, it has been suspended for seven weeks in Tigray.
According to Guterres, “all parties should let humanitarian assistance to reach anyone in need of civilian assistance immediately and without hindrances.”
“Civilians pay a horrible price, and there is no political answer.”
He called for a quick appeal of peace talks to reach a political settlement.

“The United Nations is ready to support the African Union in various ways to stop this tragedy on the Ethiopian people,” he declared in his closing statement.
