The award was traditionally given in January of each year and recognised the finest player from the previous year, however this topic underwent a fundamental shift.
The date of the new award has become October, and the players will not be held during the year, but during the last season 2021-2022, to become a seasonal prize, instead of an annual prize.
As a result, the players will be evaluated between August 2021 and August 2022, which coincides with the European football season in addition to the summer months that could see continental championships.

Previously, journalists selected from throughout the globe could analyse and vote on players through the award, which was run by the newspaper “France Football.”
Only journalists from the top 100 FIFA football-ranked nations will be able to vote from now on.
The method used to choose the nominees is the third modification.
Previously, the voters were required to evaluate the players according to three data, the first is the individual level of the player during the season, and the second is his achievements with the teams he played during the season, and the third is the player’s football career.
