The United Nations celebrates World Food Day amid unprecedented threats to food security

The United Nations commemorates World Food Day today, which is observed on the sixteenth of October each year. In 2022, the celebration will take place as the global food security crisis continues to worsen and an unprecedentedly large number of people in Asia and Africa face the threat of extreme hunger.

In addition to the 970,000 people who are at risk of starvation in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen, a high number of people worldwide are hungry, according to the most recent report from the Food and Agriculture Organization on the state of food security and nutrition in the world.

According to the United Nations Media Center, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated that the 2022 World Food Day arrives at a challenging time for global food security in a message on the occasion of World Food Day. The theme for this year is “No one left behind the knees. improved life, better nutrition, better environment, and improved production.

“Guterres” forewarned that over the previous three years, the number of persons suffering from hunger had increased more than twofold. Almost a million people live in famine conditions, as they face the risk of death and destruction due to hunger.

The Kofid-19, the climate crisis, environmental degradation, conflicts over equality, and other issues have a disproportionately negative impact on the most vulnerable local communities, as noted by “Guterres,” demonstrating how the conflict in Ukraine quickly resulted in high food and fertiliser prices.

Despite growing risks to food security, the United Nations observes World Food Day.
