The European Union and the United States agree to enhance cooperation in the field of green energy in Africa

By expanding the availability of affordable, abundant renewable energy on the continent and enhancing local access to it, the European Union and the United States have decided to expand their cooperation on sustainable energy in sub-Saharan Africa.

A new Memorandum of Understanding on enhancing close cooperation between the two parties, allowing joint promotion of projects like “the main plan of the continental energy system,” was signed in Washington by the Director of the United States Agency for International Development and the Commissioner for the European Union International Partnership, Gota Europe.

“Within the framework of the European Union Global Gate, or what is known as the “Global Gate Way,” we strengthen our cooperation with the American administration to develop the strategic independence of our African partners, including by opening more opportunities to ensure affordable, dependable, and sustainable energy. She continued, “The close cooperation between the European Union and the United States aims to support a fair and green transition for energy, reduce its poverty, and increase access to modern and reliable energy at affordable prices for all in sub-Saharan Africa. By working together to achieve these common goals with the strengths, expertise, and resources of each of them, The European Union and the United States hope to enhance their impact on increasing the availability of energy.

The statement went on to say that the two parties planned to coordinate their efforts to support projects in sub-Saharan Africa at the regional and national levels in a variety of fields, including small-scale energy production outside of the electricity grid to increase access to renewable energy, including the electrification of health facilities, schools, and businesses run by women, young people, and rural families, as well as storing energy, promoting their efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions.
