The people who live in the James Bay and Hudson Bay areas have received medical care from hospitals in Kingston, Ontario, for more than 50 years.
Five Nations Energy Inc. (FNEI) gave the Kingston Health Sciences Centre a donation of $250,000 on Friday in appreciation for the ongoing care (KHSC).
The relationship between Kingston and Queen’s University has been ongoing for 56 years, and according to FNEI CEO Pat Chilton, neither institution has ever turned down a request from the organisation.
On behalf of all the people who over the years have utilised that and visited the hospital, we just wanted to acknowledge that relationship and express our gratitude.
There will be no shortage of funds to use for significant hospital initiatives thanks to the unrestricted quarter million in financing.
According to Tom Zsolnay, president and chief executive officer of University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF), “the government doesn’t pay for any equipment.”
There are occasional exceptions if the hospital needs imaging equipment for treating cancer, but generally speaking, the hospital must obtain the money outside of operational funding. Thus, one of the sources used to buy that kind of equipment is charity.
Since he delivered care in Moose Factory more than 35 years ago, the cooperation holds a special meaning for KHSC President and CEO Dr. David Pichora.
It’s wonderful to be able to provide a service that is simply not physically possible for the small settlements up there, adds Pichora. “I was enquiring about coworkers I had at the hospital who had been there for at least 20, 30 years. It’s a deep connection with a long history that has ties to countless numbers of people.
The $250,000 donation is intended to enhance the hospital’s facilities with new technology and innovation, assuring the ongoing treatment of the James Bay and Hudson Bay populations.
