On Friday, October 7, Greece used solar energy, wind energy, and electrical energy to fully operate on renewable energy for 5 hours.
According to the nation’s independent energy transmission operator, 3106 hours of electricity were reached around 9 am local time, according to Sky News.
“The demand has been completely met by renewable energy sources for the first time in the history of the Greek power grid.
Greece hopes that by 2030, renewable energy sources will account for at least 70% of its energy mix, with a goal of more than doubling its current green energy capacity.
Greece generated 39.4% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2017, including 19.8% from wind, 9.9% from water, and 8.9% from solar, according to Ember, an independent research organisation.
It produced 61 percent of its electric capacity of fossil fuels in 2021..
