Voluder Zellinski, the president of Ukraine, formally requested that Odessa be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in a speech to the organization’s executive council. Odri Azoulay, the organization’s general manager, emphasised that “this initiative indicates confidence in the UNESCO protection mechanisms” after receiving the request.

In a video message recorded in advance to 58 member states of the UNESCO Executive Council, President Zellinski announced the necessity of imparting the nomination of the world heritage of the historical center of Odisa and expressed his “gratitude” of the United Nations Organization for procedures that he led in Ukraine according to its mandate, and called for “expanding joint efforts. ” to safeguard the nation’s cultural legacy.

UNESCO has officially received the nomination file from a delegation headed by Ambassador Vadim Umilcinko, the permanent delegate of UNESCO, and by Gennadi Trukhanov, the mayor of Odessa on Tuesday morning, and the file will be reviewed by the consulting bodies and studying it in the next session of the World Heritage Committee, which will be its adult member states There are 21 nations that make nomination decisions.

The historical centre of Odessa will be added to the World Heritage List in recognition of its unique importance on the international stage and its responsibility to safeguard all of humanity. Legally speaking, the 1972 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of World Heritage will have an increased protection zone due to the inclusion of this property.

All nations that have signed this agreement are committed to helping defend the listed sites and to refraining from taking any deliberate actions that could harm this site, either directly or indirectly.

Zelinski recommends that Odessa, Ukraine, be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
