Will the opposition seek to embarrass President Saeed through municipal work

Tunisia – Given that a number of parties that helped shape the political scene in the black decade control a number of municipalities, some political forces opposed to the July 25, 2021 procedures and President Qais Saeed attempt to muddle the situation in the nation by adapting the municipal work to their interests.

The mayor of Bizerte, Kamal Bin Amara, declined to decorate the city or make the customary preparations to receive the President of the Republic due to the impending celebration of the French forces’ exit from Tunisia and the state of Bizerte in the north of the country on October 15.

The mayor, who belongs to the Al -Nahda movement, said in a statement to the Shams FM radio on Thursday that the decision came in response to a petition presented by a number of people who demanded that the city not decorate until the president stands on the real situation in it.
The municipality “will not engage in spending to decorate the city this year under the excuse of being marginalised,” the mayor declared in a statement posted on the page’s official Facebook page.

Samir Abdel-Lawy, the governor of the area, was incensed by this stance and warned of actions aimed at deceiving the Presidency Foundation.

The governor of Bizerte, who is thought to be close to President Saeed and took part in his campaign for the 2019 presidential elections, said in a statement to radio station “Jawhara El Special” on Thursday that he would turn to enlisting the help of neighbouring states to challenge the municipal decision in Bizerte to forgo holding the evacuation feasts.

The governor made reference to the emergency law that gives him the authority to enact such measures, primarily political in nature, against the mayor of the city who is a member of the Renaissance movement.
Some of the forces supporting President Qais Saeed have repeatedly warned of the use of some parties affected by the exceptional procedures on July 25, 2021, by exploiting the municipalities to confuse government work.

According to sources, a number of municipalities put barriers in the way of the candidates for the legislative elections on December 17, particularly given that the electoral law mandates that the candidate secure 400 local signatures in support before being allowed to run.
Following the municipal elections in 2018, the Renaissance movement and some of its allies in politics were able to take control of a number of local councils, particularly in the state of Bizerte.

The decision to not celebrate the evacuation in Bizerte was a first of its sort, and analysts questioned the mayor’s motivations in light of the region’s long history of marginalisation under the leadership of the Renaissance movement and its allies, just like the rest of the nation.

In order to counter the penetration of some parties that oppose the political reforms that have been occurring for more than a year, a number of political groups have advocated for the early holding of municipal elections.
Due to his rejection of various municipal decisions that he believed to be within his authority, the governor of Kamal al-Faqih engaged into past times in conflict with the mayor of Tunis, Souad Abdel Rahim, who had ties to the Renaissance movement.

Will the opposition attempt to humiliate President Saeed by working in local government?
