The German government intends to tighten the rules for arms exports

According to sources within the administration, the German government plans to tighten the laws governing the export of weapons.
According to sources in Berlin, the Ministry of Economy has drafted a paper outlining the fundamental principles of the law governing the regulation of arms exports.
The paper states that it is expected to give a greater weight to take into account human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the importing countries, when making decisions related to the export of weapons in the future.

The sources further stated that the ministry planned to begin holding meetings with the German government’s security-related departments soon.
According to the ministry, the Act of Control of the Establishment of Weapons, which was unveiled by the ruling coalition, will allow for the first time the legal consolidation of the “limitation strategy for the export of weapons.”

If there is a reasonable doubt that the goods to be exported will be used “in internal repression and continuous and methodological violations of human rights and to practise violence directed at a gender or minority or had to do with the help Children as soldiers,” it is in principle forbidden to issue export approvals, according to the basic pillars paper of the Ministry of Economy.
