Josep Borrell Moscow, a representative of the European Union’s foreign policy, said on Thursday that if President Vladimir Putin deployed nuclear weapons on Ukraine, the Western military response would “destroy” the EU’s army.
Borrell remarked at the launch of a diplomatic academy in Brussels, “Putin swears he does not lie.”
“Any nuclear attack against Ukraine will be born in response, not a nuclear response, but rather a strong military response that would eliminate the Russian army.
Fears that Moscow would expand the use of a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine have been raised in light of Putin’s apparent allusion to four occupied regions in reaction to military casualties.
NATO Secretary-General NATO warned Russia that launching a nuclear assault on its pro-Western neighbour would have “grave consequences.”
According to a NATO official, “there will be a severe response, and it is almost inevitable that a reaction from several countries and possibly from NATO itself.”
However, since Ukraine is not a member of the alliance and is not protected by the martial defence, the alliance did not threaten to retaliate with its nuclear arsenal.
Fearing a catastrophic nuclear exchange with Moscow, the United States and NATO have not yet ceased their military involvement in the situation in Ukraine.
Borrell: If Putin uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the Russian army will be destroyed.
