According to officials, significant portions of the states of Victoria, South New South Wales, and the northern regions of Tasmania Island were affected by severe weather, with some of these areas receiving amounts of rain since Wednesday evening that typically fall over the course of more than a month.
“This led to massive and wide floods with some rivers suffered a standard flood, and this will continue with the move towards the estuary and the matter will get worse,” Dean Naramor, meteorological expert, told ABC TV.
Social media videos showed individuals fleeing in the water with their pets up to their knees as others of them were being rescued in boats.
Victoria’s rivers, particularly the Maribirong in West Melbourne and the Julbourne, have reached significant flood levels, forcing the evacuation of residents of Layla.
In Tasmania, the flood crisis intensified after more evacuation orders during the night, while hundreds of residents in southern New South Wales spent the night in shelters.
Officials said heavy rains are expected to recede on Friday evening, but the floods may continue until the beginning of the week.
Since early last year, Australia’s eastern coast has been repeatedly battered by disastrous floods.
