The launch of an international alliance for health and climate during the “COP 27” conference in Egypt

An international alliance for health and climate will be launched during the activities of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), which Egypt will host next month and with the participation of about 62 countries, according to Naima Al-Qusayr. Across the globe, nations are required to work in the area of adaptation to climate consequences, taking the risk of climate change into account when making any decisions, and expanding the financial options for adaption.

This came during the activities of the third session of the scientific salon organized by the Publishing and Information Department at the National Research Center; To present the achievements of a number of the center’s private institutes in the face of the effects of climate change on health, as part of Egypt’s preparations to host the climate summit under the patronage of Dr. Mohamed Hashem, the head of the center.

According to Mahmoud Al-Mutaini, he met with representatives from British universities and the embassy on a number of occasions for cooperation in the area of research and studies related to health and climate as part of the preparations for the Climate Conference (COP27) to be held in Sharm El Sheikh. These meetings were held under the supervision of the Academy of Scientific Research.

Al-Mutaini emphasised the value of sharing scientific experiences amongst students of scientific research in the two nations, and that doing so has a good impact on both Egyptian and British universities.

The World Health Representative for her part emphasised that Egypt’s hosting of the Climate Summit (COP27) represents the ability that nation possesses in the region and globally to address problems that plague the global community in all spheres of life, particularly health.

“Al -Qusayr” explained that the World Health Organization in Egypt is working with the Ministry of Health and its various institutions to reduce the effects of climate changes that have a negative return on human health, as well as affecting the mental and psychological health of humans, as indicates the latest scientific studies.
Al-Qusayr issued a dire warning, predicting that between 2030 and 2050, starvation, malaria, diarrhoea, and heat stress will result in 250,000 fatalities.

She stressed that climate change is at the top of the list of environmental risks that humanity faces, with the World Health Organization estimating that more than 13 million deaths worldwide are caused by environmental factors that may be minimised and controlled by their causes.

“Al-Qusayr” emphasised the significance of turning the climate summit into a health conference that places health and social justice at the centre of discussions, pointing out that Egypt has shown a clear interest in environmental health, particularly climate change and its multiple effects on human health.
