JERUSALEM – Tension overlooks the East Jerusalem, amid a general strike in protest against the imposition of the Israeli authorities to close the Shuafat refugee camp, and continue a massive operation to arrest an Israeli soldier who was killed near the camp.
Young Palestinians barricaded the streets of the communities near the cement cubes and trash cans while the stores and markets in the Old City did not open.
The Shuafat camp was besieged five days ago, Nawal, 50, said after purchasing bread from an oven at the Al-Masara market near Bab al-Amoud. She noted that her daughter resided there with her family and continued, “When she spoke to her, she said that the situation is horrible.”
“The day before yesterday, while I was talking to her on the phone, I was hearing a shooting sound and gas canisters,” she said, adding, ” An Israeli soldier killed Saturday in an attack targeting a barrier separating the Shuafat camp from East Jerusalem. The outlet was then the target of an extensive search and chase that is currently ongoing.
The Israeli forces closed the camp entrances, schools and medical centers were disrupted, and clashes erupted between Palestinian youths who lit tires and threw stones and Israeli forces.
The Israeli police are bolstered throughout the city during the Jewish holiday of the throne, which lasts for a week and coincided with the closure of the Palestinian neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem.
Two days before Friday prayers, which typically saw clashes between Israeli police and worshipers around the courtyards of Al-Aqsa and the city’s entrances, these developments and tensions also take place.
In the occupied West Bank, west of Nablus and close to the Shamroun Chef, another Israeli soldier was murdered on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Israeli army announced that it had erected obstacles and stopped highways near the city of Nablus.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, who revealed Monday that a 12-year-old boy who was injured last month during an Israeli military operation in the city of Jenin had been died, Israeli troops had killed four young males in the West Bank since last Friday.
Since last spring, attacks by Palestinians, some of whom were Israeli citizens, have resulted in the deaths of more than 20 individuals, the majority of whom were civilians in Israel and the occupied West Bank, while three of the attackers were also slain.
According to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 109 Palestinians have died since the start of this year, including activists, civilians, and Palestinian journalist Sherine Abu Hakla. In response to the attacks, Israeli forces increased their military operations in the occupied West Bank.
According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the United Nations, 84 Palestinians have died between January 1, 2022, and September 20, 2022.
In colonies that the majority of the international world views as illegal, over 500,000 Jewish settlers reside, with about 200,000 of them living in occupied East Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is under tension due to a strike and a closure.
