Germany begins with an initiative to create an improved European air defense system

The proclamation of intentions for the establishment of the so-called “European Heaven Shield Initiative” will be signed at a meeting of the defence ministers of the participating nations tomorrow, Thursday, in Brussels, outside of a meeting of NATO defence ministers.

Olaf Schultz, the German chancellor, unveiled the initiative at the end of August, calling it a “security gain for all of Europe.” He added that the European air defence is more effective and cost-effective than if each nation had built its own air defence in a time-consuming and expensive manner.

Schultz had previously stated that Germany would make significant investments in air defence in the years to come and that other European neighbours could get involved from the start. The advisor then mentioned the Netherlands, Poland, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Litania, as well as the Czechs, Slovakians, and partners from the Scandinavian countries by name.

After Russia’s war on Ukraine transformed the threat to Europe, calls for better air defence in Germany increased. For this reason, the proposal takes into account a response to the Russian war, which has been ongoing for more than six months.
It’s interesting to note that Germany now deploys Stinger-Airways Air Defense helicopters and missiles in the area of the airfield. This laptop was given to Ukraine by Germany.

Additionally, Germany has a Patriot system appropriate for middle altitudes of 30 km. There are currently 12 Patriot systems in Germany’s possession, but this number is insufficient to safeguard the entire nation.
Regarding defence against plastic rockets that travel to vast heights, the army has a “capability gap.”

One of the prospective possibilities for the German army is to purchase the Israeli “Arrow 3” air defence system. This system is the top tier of the multi-tiered Israeli air defence system and is capable of destroying assaulting weaponry at altitudes greater than 100 km above the atmosphere. As a result, the protected area can be expanded and the warheads can be destroyed far from the intended target.

Germany launches a project to improve the European air defence system.
