Lebanese Minister of Health: Fears of a wider spread of cholera in the country

The emphasis of the cholera epidemic’s spread in Lebanon is still limited to the Akkar region in the north of the nation, according to Dr. Firas Al-Abyad, the country’s minister of health, who stated his fears of a wider spread of the disease.

Al-Abyad confirmed in a statement today that a multilateral crisis cell exists and holds regular meetings. He emphasised that he will tour the affected area to see what is being done to address the problem, noting that cholera is a quickly transmitted disease and that precautions must be taken to prevent it, particularly because the patient may not be showing any symptoms.

As the Ministry of Health announced that it had taken a number of measures to confront the disease, with the need to prepare a high level of preparedness to prevent any widespread spread of the epidemic, two people in Lebanon contracted cholera yesterday and yesterday, marking the first appearance of the disease in Lebanon since the end of the epidemic in 1993.

The health minister also said, in a conference yesterday, that the ministry has outfitted hospitals and isolation facilities to ensure that the epidemic is contained and to secure a first stock of vaccines and medications needed to treat injuries. He added that there are several suspected cases, and the necessary tests are being done to confirm them.
