Lavrov: Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy is only defensive

Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, stated today (Saturday) that Moscow is committed to the declaration made by the presidents of the five nuclear countries on January 3 last year and that its nuclear strategy is to use it defensively with the only purpose of deterrence.
As quoted by the Russian “TASS” news agency, Lavrov stated that “there is no use in debating this matter,” adding that “Russia does not accept threats from the West on the prospective use of nuclear weapons.

But we have no intention of engaging with them on this subject because there is no purpose in this discussion. We surely do not accept forceful assertions about the repercussions.

Regarding the scenario of blocking the flow of gas in the “Northern Stream” line between Russia and Europe, Lavrov said that the United States of America is the first benefit, saying that the United States is interested in violently ousting competitors in the natural gas market in Europe.

Lavrov emphasised that Western nations “will not be able to tear the Russian economy to bits” in regards to sanctions against Russia, stating that they have already failed in doing so but would never be able to carry it out.

What they wanted Americans to experience, Lavrov continued, “is already beginning to happen in their countries, where many European nations are dealing with skyrocketing prices, declining incomes, and energy shortages, and political scientists are already discussing the growing prospect of societal unrest. The entire population is currently paying this price. opposition to Russian terrorism

Lavrov emphasised that by maintaining good relations with Moscow’s allies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America—who support equal cooperation and reject attempts to politicise trade and economic relations—Moscow will be able to strengthen its economic and technological sovereignty and build alternative financial and logistical chains for foreign trade.
