Officials reported on Saturday that Italian police had found cocaine in a shipping container in the province of Catania in eastern Sicily, with a street value of several million euros.
The crate of the tropical fruit arrived in Sicily from Ecuador and was opened by firefighters before being examined by Guardia di Fianza, the Italian financial police, and customs inspectors who noticed an abnormal weld on its exterior.
Officials discovered 96 packages of pure cocaine, they added, in the insulation of the container.
According to authorities, the 110 kilogrammes of cocaine was estimated to be worth $12. 6 million on the open market.
