China lashes out at latest U.S. export controls on chips

(AP) BEIJING — China on Saturday denounced the latest American move to tighten export controls, saying it would make it more difficult for China to import and produce advanced computing devices and that it would “isolate and backfire” on the United States.
According to Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, “the U. S. exploits export control mechanisms to purposefully restrict and suppress Chinese firms in order to maintain its sci-tech superiority.”

She claimed that it would harm both the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese businesses as well as the interests of American businesses.
The “weaponization and politicisation” of science, technology, and economic and trade issues by the United States, according to Mao, will not halt China’s development.

On Friday, export controls were amended, adding new permission requirements for things that will be used in a supercomputer or for semiconductor research in China, as well as a list of specific high-performance, advanced computing chips and manufacturing equipment.
The United States claimed that the export restrictions were added as part of continuous measures to safeguard its national security and interests abroad.
U. S.

-China relations have been worse in recent years due to security and technology concerns. While China has set aside billions for investment into the production of semiconductors, the U. S. has put in place a variety of procedures and restrictions to prevent China from getting chip technology.
Businesses that either export chips or produce chips in China, such as semiconductor companies in the United States and around the world, have been hit.

The stock price of semiconductor firms like Nvidia and AMD has dropped by 40% in the last 12 months.
The Semiconductor Industry Association, which speaks for the U.S. semiconductor industry, issued a statement saying, “We understand the goal of ensuring national security and urge the U.S. government to implement the rules in a targeted way—and in collaboration with international partners—to help level the playing field and mitigate unintended harm to U.S. innovation.”
