US lawmaker visits Taiwan and attends the National Day celebration of the Republic of China

Eddie Bernice Johnson, a member of the US Congress, will visit Taiwan for four days starting on Sunday, the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry stated today, Saturday. During her stay, she will attend the Republic of China’s National Day celebrations.

According to a statement from the ministry, which was cited by the local newspaper (Fox Taiwan), during her four-day visit, Johnson, the chair of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, will attend events celebrating the Republic of China’s National Day in Taipei on Monday and meet with Audrey Tang, the minister of digital affairs in Taiwan, as well as President Tsai Ing-wen.

She noted that in order to discuss potential methods to strengthen bilateral ties in science, space, and technology, the envoy would also travel to Hsinchu to meet with representatives of the National Space Organization.
The Democratic Party representative has supported Taiwan’s membership in international organisations like the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization for close to three decades, according to the State Department.

According to the statement, Johnson’s upcoming trip—the ninth by US senators this year—shows Congress’ support for Taiwan.
The Foreign Ministry said in a second announcement that same day that 19 Japanese lawmakers had arrived in Taiwan earlier in the day for a three-day visit.

The US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan at the beginning of the same month spurred Beijing to conduct military drills with live ammunition in the nearby waters, and in August of last year, China levied sanctions on seven Taiwan officials for their support of the “island secession”.
