On the shore of the western Libyan city of Sabratha, fifteen illegal immigrants were shot dead by traffickers inside the boat carrying them before their bodies were set on fire.
In a statement released on Friday, the Libyan Red Crescent said that “after a boat carrying 15 intact bodies outside the boat and charred bodies inside was discovered, the volunteers of the Libyan Red Crescent, Sabratha branch, moved to the scene and all the bodies were recovered and placed in the hospital refrigerator to complete the remaining legal procedures.
The local media confirmed that the victims were illegal immigrants who were shot dead as a result of a money dispute between two people smugglers, which led one of them to shoot and kill the 15 immigrants before setting fire to the boat that they were all aboard. The International Rescue Committee called the massacre of undocumented immigrants on the Sabratha coast “terrible” and demanded that European Union activities in the Mediterranean be expanded to better protect them.
