Today, Thursday, a landmine laid by the Houthi militia exploded in Ma’rib Governorate in northeastern Yemen, killing two children and injuring a third.
According to the Yemeni Landmine Monitor, a mine explosion in the village of “Mallah” in the Majzar district on the northwestern side of Ma’rib Governorate resulted in the deaths of two children—Saqr Muhammad Sinan, 8 years old, and (Qaid Abdullah Khaima, 12 years old—as well as the injury of a third child in two different ways.

The Yemeni Landmine Monitor had documented the killing and wounding of 273 victims, including 81 people killed in separate incidents by Houthi militia mines and projectiles from the remnants of war in large areas of Yemen during the truce period sponsored by the United Nations from last April 2 until October 1, 2022 AD.

The Yemeni Landmine Monitor had recorded the deaths and injuries of 273 victims, including 81 murdered in separate instances by mines and projectiles from the Houthi militia during the truce period supported by the UN from last April 2 through October 1, 2022 AD in wide parts of Yemen.

He confirmed that there had been an increase in casualties during the cease-fire as a result of numerous displaced families trying to get back home. Many of these families’ members had been hit by mines and explosives as well as by the catastrophe that had swept mines from contaminated areas into new settlements and agricultural areas.

The UN, states that have ratified the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, governments that support human rights, and international organisations were all urged by Human Rights Watch to pressure the Houthis into turning over mine maps and to support all initiatives aimed at cleaning up civilian areas in Yemen that have been contaminated by mines, explosive ordnance, devices, and projectiles.

In all sides to the conflict, including the internationally outlawed “individuals,” only the Houthi militia—proxy Iran’s in Yemen—plants mines and explosive devices of various types and sizes.
According to human rights reports, the Houthi militia planted over two million mines, leading to the deaths and injuries of over 20,000 civilians.

The UN Group of Eminent Experts stated in its assessment that “the Houthis’ systematic and indiscriminate use of landmines, notably along the western shore, poses a continued threat to the civilian population.”
