Washington sends a nuclear aircraft carrier to the Korean Peninsula

The United States will send a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Korean Peninsula after missile launches, according to Defense Ministry officials, after North Korea fired a ballistic missile that went over Japan.
The USS Ronald Reagan, which completed training with the navies of South Korea and Japan on Friday, is currently in the Sea of Japan, according to a US Navy official on Wednesday.

The transfer of the aircraft carrier was verified by US officials after the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff made this announcement.
The South Korea-US alliance is resolutely determined to strengthen its position against North Korea’s repeated provocations and respond decisively to any provocations and threats from the North, according to a statement from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “The redeployment of the carrier strike group to the Korean Peninsula is highly unusual,” the statement read.

While Pyongyang’s decision to lob a medium-range missile over Japan for the first time since 2017 is cited in the decision to return the aircraft carrier, it also comes the day after that event.
Four US and four South Korean fighter jets immediately responded by dropping bombs on an uninhabited island in the Yellow Sea, while US and Japanese warplanes flew over the Sea of Japan together.

But in a humiliating episode early on Wednesday, a South Korean ballistic missile that was being fired in response for a launch by North Korea malfunctioned and burst during live-fire drills with the US.
It is significant that the US denounced Pyongyang’s missile launch on Tuesday and referred to it as a “dangerous and reckless action,” according to Adrian Watson, the spokeswoman for the National Security Council.

“This act destabilises the region and demonstrates Korea’s flagrant disdain for international safety norms and United Nations Security Council resolutions,” she said.
The White House responded by stating that President Joe Biden called with Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, on Tuesday morning to reaffirm America’s “resolute commitment to Japan’s defence.” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also had conversations with his counterparts in Japan and South Korea later in the day, according to Watson.
