Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne will travel to Algeria next Sunday with a sizable team of 16 ministers, according to the French Foreign Ministry.
According to the French Foreign Ministry, the purpose of the two-day trip was to strengthen the “relationship” that French President Emmanuel Macron and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had started at the end of August.
Without providing any other information, the Foreign Ministry noted that Borne will meet with Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the president of Algeria.

The visit would mostly focus on youth and economic cooperation, the agency quoted “Agence France Presse” as saying, while the most delicate issues surrounding immigration and the creation of a joint committee of historians are still being discussed.
According to the same source, the question of expanding Algerian gas imports to France is “not on the agenda” of the visit.

The purpose of the trip is to “implement” the six pillars of the “Algeria Declaration for a Renewed Partnership,” which was agreed upon by the presidents of France and Algeria on August 27 at the end of a three-day visit to Algeria.

The French Prime Minister is scheduled to lay a wreath at the martyr’s tomb honouring Algeria’s battle of independence from France (1954–1962) upon her arrival in Algeria before visiting the Saint Eugen cemetery in Algiers, which is home to many French citizens who were born in Algeria.

Following their meeting, Born and Ayman Ben Abdelrahman will open the High-level Joint Ministerial Committee’s fifth session and witness the signing of agreements pertaining to training and transition in the fields of energy, economic cooperation, youth, and education.

The French Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that “the conversations are not ended yet” on the issue of reducing the visa regime given to Algerians in exchange for Algeria boosting cooperation in battling illicit immigration.
According to Bourne’s office, the joint committee of historians is “still under development” and will analyse the two nations’ respective archives about the history of French colonialism and the Algerian resistance “without taboos.

The joint ministerial committee’s most recent meeting was in 2017, which is noteworthy. Former French Prime Minister Jean Castix was supposed to travel to Algeria in April 2021, but due to severe bilateral relations, the trip was abruptly cancelled.
