South Korea’s president vows to protect his country after Pyongyang’s missiles

Local News President Yoon Seok-yeol of South Korea promised to defend his country’s integrity through a solid alliance with the US and trilateral relations with the US and Japan on Thursday.
According to South Korean Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean president’s promise came after North Korea launched two additional ballistic missiles earlier on Thursday.

Yoon Seok-yeol told reporters, “I realise people are worried, but our administration will look out for the lives and safety of citizens through our strong alliance with the United States and security cooperation between us, the United States, and Japan.

A medium-range ballistic missile was launched by North Korea on Tuesday with the intention of “striking strategic assets that will be deployed on the Korean Peninsula” in an emergency, the South Korean president added, adding that Guam was within its range.
The Presidential National Security Council of South Korea, which is located in Seoul, sharply denounced Pyongyang’s Thursday launch of two short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea.

The repositioning of a US aircraft carrier into South Korean waters demonstrates why the council advised against taking drastic actions.
As part of its sixth launch in two weeks, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea.
Just two days prior to this most recent launch, a medium-range ballistic missile that was directed over Japan was launched.

The rocket travelled 4,500 kilometres before crashing into the Pacific Ocean, according to Yonhap, whereas Guam, a US island, is 3,400 kilometres away from Pyongyang.
The North has repeatedly launched missiles in opposition to joint military drills between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo, as well as the repositioning of the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan a day earlier in South Korean waters.

The relocation of the US aircraft carrier was denounced by the foreign ministry of the North on Thursday, which it claimed demonstrated that Pyongyang “is watching the United States and poses a major threat to the stability of the situation on the Korean Peninsula.”
