Medvedev: The concept of a free and open area in the Indo-Pacific threatens the stability of the region

According to Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of the Russian National Security Council, Western countries’ intentions to establish the idea of “keeping the Indo-Pacific region free and open” will cause social and economic instability in the nations of the Asia-Pacific region.

The words made by Medvedev were made during his speech at the opening of an international conference on Sakhalin Island, which was conducted under the theme of “Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development,” according to a report from the Russian news agency “TASS” published today, Thursday.
According to Medvedev, certain nations have increased their presence in Asian nations “under the guise of assisting like-minded partners in Asia” in the creation of a “open space in the Indo-Pacific.”

“This should be expressed openly, we surely do not like it, because their intentions are hazy and they are very politicised,” Medvedev said in his speech via video link. What purpose does it serve to establish or expand organisations like (NATO) NATO in the Asia-Pacific region? It is apparent that this will not promote stability.

He cautioned that such a move would also have an impact on environmental issues, citing a rise in harmful emissions in European nations in 2022 as opposed to 2020 and 2021.
