Confusion, then panic after deadly Thai mass shooting starts

When a shooter killed dozens of children and adults at a daycare centre in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, two instructors who were there remembered the initial shock followed by the ensuing anxiety.
One of the instructors allegedly saw the shooter reload his weapon. She acknowledged her uncertainty and found herself unexpectedly wai-ing him a traditional Thai greeting.
Her colleague claimed that it was presumed that he was her parent.

At the scene of the fatal attack, the two women were speaking with a reporter from Thai television station TPBS. The TPBS withheld their names.
The coworker said, “He kicked the window.” “I went and hid in the back after he shot the door because I knew he would enter. I was so astonished that I was at a loss for words.”
At the daycare facility in Nongbua Lamphu, emergency service personnel and passersby gathered well into the night.

According to police spokesman Archayon Kraithong, the attack in one of Thailand’s poorest regions resulted in at least 37 fatalities.
Following the attack, blood donations poured into a hospital in Nongbua Lamphu in Thailand.
The victims’ relatives received a message from Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha expressing his “deep grief,” and he also said that officials were looking into the shooter’s motivation.

Dumrongsak Kittiprapas, the head of Thailand’s national police, said, “We must take lessons on how to control the scene and the situation more swiftly, and how to better respond to such situations.”
The attacker, a former police officer charged with narcotics offences, murdered his wife and child before killing himself.
It is the nation’s bloodiest rampage in recorded history.
